What Should a College Essay Be About?A college essay is the single most important part of your grade for most colleges. That is not to say that grades are everything though. It is really just that you do not want to disappoint the college counselor.A college essay, it is said, is the single most important part of the grade because your counselor will be looking at it first thing in the morning or the last thing before the night before. I am no expert on college essays, but I have had several friends who are experts and I have always wondered if that is really true. For example, I once read an essay in which a first year student's first sentence was 'Darth Vader lives on the moon of Endor' The author then went on to explain that he then went back and rewrote his essay to remove this reference. His grade was good, but he still wasn't that thrilled about it.College is hard enough without having to read essays by students who are not all that bright. Anyway, I think it really doesn't mat ter whether you write about Star Wars or not. What does matter is that you are careful about the types of topics that you choose, and you write them well.When I say well, I don't mean that you write the whole thing. That is just silly. But you should try to choose a topic that you really care about. Don't feel that you have to pick the topic based on popularity or even on which subjects are easiest for you. Pick something that will interest you.Think about it, if your best friend had to take a test and write an essay about the subject matter in question, would you want him to fail because it was a topic that made him angry? If your worst enemy was told he would have to write an essay about his father's abusive behavior, would you want him to fail because it is his dad's behavior that causes his problems? And do you think he would make any progress at all?One of the things that tends to irritate college students more than the topic they write about is the topic's actual use in the wo rld. It may seem like such a small thing, but if you have an essay about bed bugs, you better be able to cite the right source. If you can't cite your source, it doesn't matter how compelling your story or how well you worded your arguments.What should a college essay be about? It is best if it is one of those 'you' essays. You need to know how to use your topic, so it is best if it is not too long or too technical. One other thing that you need to know is that your topic should not be too boring either.I have read many essays and once you get to the middle of the college essay, it gets difficult. Either the reader is bored or if it is technical, you are having a hard time conveying your point. So stick to the topic that interests you will have a far better chance of writing a good essay.
